Marcus Michaelsen is a post-doctoral researcher who joined LSTS in December 2019 under a Marie-Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship. His research project ‘DIGIACT’ deals with digital surveillance and repression against transnational activist networks.
Marcus’ research interests include digital technologies and political activism, authoritarianism, as well as media and politics in the Middle East. He holds a PhD in Media and Communication Studies from the University of Erfurt (Germany) and a Master in Middle Eastern Studies from Université de Provence (France). From 2014 until 2018 he has worked as a lecturer and researcher in the Political Science Department of the University of Amsterdam, primarily in the research project “Authoritarianism in a Global Age”. In 2018-19, Marcus was a Senior Information Controls Fellow with the Open Technology Fund.
