New research project on surveillance and transnational repression

[Project] LSTS hosts a new two-year research project funded by a Marie-Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship.

In his project DIGIACT, post-doctoral research fellow Marcus Michaelsen will investigate transnational forms of digitally enabled information control, surveillance and repression against political activists, journalists and human rights defenders from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) who reside in the European Union.

DIGIACT will analyze how repressive regimes seek to disrupt the communications and control the activities of government opponents and critics outside their state territory. The project also examines the impact of digital threats on the targeted communities of transnational activists, their strategies of resistance as well as implications for freedom of expression, privacy and other human rights.
