[Research] The joint PhD project of LSTS in collaboration with the ETIS Research Laboratory at CY Cergy University Paris is funded by the EUTOPIA PhD co-tutelle program 2020.
The PhD research ‘BALANCING TRANSPARENCY OF AI IN HEALTHCARE WITH SAFETY AND QUALITY. A LEGAL AND TECHNICAL PERSPECTIVE’ is selected to be funded under the EUTOPIA PhD co-tutelle program 2020. The research project is organized in collaboration between LSTS (representing VUB as a home university) and ETIS (representing CY Cergy University Paris as a host university). The project will be conducted by Anastasiya Kiseleva - LSTS and HALL researcher specializing in legal and ethical issues of AI in healthcare. She will be co-supervised by Professor Paul de Hert (LSTS) and Professor Dimitris Kotzinos (ETIS). While the project is interdisciplinary, the LSTS’s expertise in legal and ethical issues arising out of the use of new technologies is perfectly complemented by the ETIS’s knowledge in data science.
The proposed research will focus on analyzing the current legal framework of AI’s transparency in healthcare and finding the technically feasible way to achieve it. According to data scientists, the most advanced algorithms are often the most accurate and at the same time least explainable. Thus, the safety and performance of AI might be the trade-offs of its full transparency. Additionally, healthcare itself is the domain where the highest level of transparency is hardly achievable. Any treatment is always a complex, risky and unpredictable process. Thus, the project is aimed to find the right level of AI’s transparency in healthcare, assess if it is currently ensured and if not, suggest measures to achieve it both compliant from the legal and technical points of view.
The EUTOPIA PhD co-tutelle program 2020 is co-funded by the Erasmus+ Program of the European Union and promotes scientific excellence, research collaboration and academic mobility. More details of the program and the call are here.
