[Visiting scholar] Guillermo Lazcoz arrived in Brussels on the 4th of January 2021, and he is joining LSTS as a visiting PhD-student for the next three months, until the 3rd of April 2021.
He is FPU researcher, granted by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, and PhD candidate at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). He is a member of the Chair in Law and the Human Genome and he also participates in the European H2020 research project PANELFIT (Participatory Approaches to a New Ethical and Legal Framework for ICT), where both VUB and UPV/EHU are partners.
His research focuses on the legal aspects of automated decision-making in healthcare. He works on data protection and privacy from a patients' rights perspective, but also on safety and transparency issues in both development and deployment of AI algorithms. Furthermore, he is deeply interested in analysing human intervention as a governance mechanism for AI in this context.
Despite the current exceptional public-health circumstances, his stay constitutes an ideal opportunity to improve his research participating in the research activities of the LSTS and collaborating with its members.
Guillermo holds a five-year Law degree (2014) from the University of the Basque Country and a Master's degree in Health Law (2016) from CEU San Pablo University, where he started his academic career conducting research on international surrogacy arrangements.
Some of his publications are available on his ORCIDid; you can contact Guillermo via email.
Guillermo will present his work on 'Artificial Intelligence in healthcare: Regulatory crossroads and issues ahead' in the Brussels Privacy Hub Doctoral seminar on 16 February 2021.
