LSTS welcomes visiting scholar Guillermo Lazcoz (January-April 2021)

[Visiting scholar] Guillermo Lazcoz arrived in Brussels on the 4^th of January 2021, and he is joining LSTS as a visiting PhD-student for the next three months, until the 3^rd of April 2021.

He is FPU researcher, granted by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, and PhD candidate at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). He is a member of the Chair in Law and the Human Genome and he also participates in the European H2020 research project PANELFIT (Participatory Approaches to a New Ethical and Legal Framework for ICT), where both VUB and UPV/EHU are partners.

His research focuses on the legal aspects of automated decision-making in healthcare. He works on data protection and privacy from a patients' rights perspective, but also on safety and transparency issues in both development and deployment of AI algorithms. Furthermore, he is deeply interested in analysing human intervention as a governance mechanism for AI in this context.

Despite the current exceptional public-health circumstances, his stay constitutes an ideal opportunity to improve his research participating in the research activities of the LSTS and collaborating with its members.

Guillermo holds a five-year Law degree (2014) from the University of the Basque Country and a Master's degree in Health Law (2016) from CEU San Pablo University, where he started his academic career conducting research on international surrogacy arrangements.
