Rawls‘s The Law of Peoples
In previous sessions, we were increasingly puzzled by the mode of existence of normative claims, particularly regarding universalism in a postcolonial context.
John Rawls’s work addresses these questions in a sober and almost classically rationalistic way. His Theory of Justice and Justice as Fairness rank among the most authoritative exclusively normative political and legal theories. His Law of Peoples can be considered one of the most influential accounts of a philosophy of international law.
Suitable for Rawls’s 100th birthday, we will read Rawls’s essay 'Law of Peoples‘ with the aim of analysing its relevance for contemporary problems.Introduction by Johannes Thumfart.
