The Brussels Privacy Hub (BPH) is organising a Doctoral Seminar series to give the opportunity to Ph.D. candidates working on privacy and data protection topics at the Law, Science, Technology and Society (LSTS) to present and discuss their work in progress. The aim of the series is to offer Ph.D. students at all research stages a training ground to refine and practice debating their scientific work, and to receive qualified feedback and questions from their peers and privacy and data protection experts. To this aim, each seminar will include a short presentation by the Ph.D. candidate, followed by an open discussion session with the audience. Seminars are also open to external participants. On 3 March 2021, Alessandra Calvi will be discussing her PhD project on 'A "feminist" critique of Data Protection Impact Assessment under the General Data Protection Regulation to address the fundamental rights challenges raised by smart cities'.
ABSTRACT
Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIA) are increasingly showcased by academics and regulators as a solution to address the fundamental rights challenges arising from (personal) data processing operations occurring in the context of smart cities. However, is it really adequate to achieve this ambitious goal?
What are the advantages and drawbacks of a DPIA in addressing fundamental rights challenges arising from smart cities? What best practices can be adopted by data controllers to overcome these limits?
The objective of this work is to critically evaluate DPIA as a tool to effectively address the fundamental rights challenges raised by smart cities by adopting a "feminist" perspective.
