Jonas Botta will be a visiting scholar at Brussels Privacy Hub in June 2019. On June 18, Jonas will hold a doctoral seminar entitled "The University of the Future – Privacy challenges and Discrimination Risks".
Tell us a few words about yourself and your research interests.
I am currently completing my Ph. D. in data protection law at the German University of Administrative Sciences Speyer and work as a research associate at the German Research Institute for Public Administration in the project area "Transformation of the State in Times of Digitization". Prior to coming to Brussels, I spent a research stay at the University of Vienna (Department of Innovation and Digitalisation in Law). My academic focus is on privacy issues in (online) education and at work. In addition, I have specialized in the legal dimension of cross-border data flows, in particular the EU-US Privacy Shield framework. Before my academic career, I graduated in law from the Humboldt University of Berlin and worked for a Member of Parliament in the field of human rights policy.
What do you hope to get from your study visit at Brussels Privacy Hub?
From my visit at the BPH I hope to gain a new insight into the academic discourse on data protection and to have many fruitful conversations. In particular, I am looking forward to hold a doctoral seminar entitled "The University of the Future – Privacy challenges and Discrimination Risks" on June 18.
Your next plans?
After my research stay in Brussels, I will attend the Summer School of the European University Institute and start my legal clerkship at the Higher Regional Court of Berlin at the end of the year. Above all, however, I will continue to devote myself to academic work and hope to keep in touch with many of you.
