You are warmly invited to our next LSTS Gender, Law, and Technology Session for an online Guest Lecture by Aafreen Collaco, Ph.D. Scholar in law at Jindal Global Law School. Her lecture, "From Digital Consent to Data Justice: A Feminist South–North Dialogue on AI Governance”, interrogates how feminist theory can reorient AI governance beyond procedural consent towards substantive data justice. Examining India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 and the EU GDPR, it demonstrates that consent, while framed as the cornerstone of individual autonomy, operates in practice as structurally coerced and fictive for women and marginalised communities in AI‑mediated welfare, labour, and platform contexts. Individual opt‑in models are irreparably limited by their neglect of relational autonomy, intersectionality, and coercive digital infrastructures. Drawing on Data Feminism scholarship, the lecture suggests alternatives, including collective consent mechanisms, intersectional AI impact assessments, and redistributive remedies to centre data justice in both Indian and European regulatory frameworks.
Aafreen is a Ph.D. Scholar in law at Jindal Global Law School, O.P. Jindal Global University, with her research focusing on the intersection of privacy law and data protection in India. She holds an LL.B. from Goa University and an LL.M. in IPR and Technology Law from JGLS, and has previously taught at leading law schools, including BITS Law School, Mumbai and Bennett University, New Delhi. Her academic interests span privacy, data protection, intellectual property, and constitutional rights.
