On 17 February 2025, 12:30h - 13:30h CET, Mathias Hanson (PhD student at the VUB Data Lab) will present his work-in-progress, entitled ‘Embedding Legal Foundations in AI: Shaping Machine Learning with Legal Norms and Rules’, followed by discussion.
Abstract:
Drawing on his background as a lawyer and his expertise in data science, Mathias works on translating abstract legal principles—such as the right to data protection and non-discrimination—into computational operationalizations that can be integrated into the ML model development, the limitations thereof, and on interpreting metrics to evaluate ML models in a legally meaningful way. By bridging the gap between law and ML design, Mathias aims to contribute to the creation of ML systems that offer due legal protection and are highly effective in real-world settings.
This event will be in a hybrid format (both on-campus and online). Interested participants wishing to take part can register by sending an email to Pablo.Rodrigo.Trigo.Kramcsak@vub.be.
