Join us at the upcoming LSTS Doctoral Seminar by Megan Leal Causton, a PhD candidate at VUB as part of the DATAUNION ERC project, on Thursday 9 October 2025, from 12:30 to 13:30 CET in room C4.05 and online via Teams.
Megan will present work in progress, including “The appraisal machine. Archival frictions in data-driven European security.” Her research investigates the evolving landscape of data management and database interoperability within the EU, with a particular focus on its implications for evidentiary data in justice and e-evidence management systems.
By integrating critical data studies, archival and information studies, and law, her study critically analyses how interoperability measures, particularly those introduced by Regulation (EU) 2019/818, reshape data governance within the EU’s Area of Freedom, Security, and Justice (AFSJ). Despite the EU’s push for interoperability across centralised databases, limited attention has been given to its impact on data reliability, authenticity, accessibility, transparency, and accountability in cross-border criminal investigations and legal proceedings.
