LSTS researcher Thiago Moraes will present his work in progress Designing for Values in AI Regulatory Sandboxes: Participatory Approaches to enable Responsible Innovation and Fundamental Rights Protection at this Doctoral Seminar.
Brief Description
Thiago’s PhD research explores how participatory approaches can help enabling fundamental rights protection into the development and testing of AI systems within AI Regulatory Sandboxes (AIRS) under the EU AI Act. It applies the Design for Values framework - using methods like Value Sensitive Design and Participatory Design - to bridge the gap between legal rights-based values and AI development. The study examines how multistakeholder engagement, especially involving civil society, can address challenges such as power imbalances and confidentiality constraints in AI experimentation. Ultimately, it aims to propose a framework for integrating participatory methods into AIRS, fostering responsible innovation that aligns with fundamental rights.
