On 3 May 2019, LSTS Researcher Gianclaudio Malgieri participated at Silicon Flatirons where he presented his new paper on 'Automated Decision-Making in the EU Member States Laws: The Right to Explanation and Other 'Suitable Safeguards', receiving important feedback. The conference was also a good occasion to re-address the concept of AI legibility, explored in a previous paper of his. LSTS Professor Mireille Hildebrandt gave a fire-start to the opening panel on 'What Problem is AI Explainability Supposed to Solve?'.
The event, co-organised by Margot Kaminski and Harry Surden at Colorado Law School (Boulder, Colorado, US) aimed to address the challenge of the right to explanation and automated decision-making in US and abroad.
Invited guests were (amongst others): Andrew Selbst, Joshua Kroll, Meg Leta Jones, Deirdre Mulligan, Nicholson Price, Brent Mittelstadt, Michale Veale, Frederik Borgesius, Paulina Kim.
