LSTS Researcher Rocco Saverino visited the Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de Las Villas (UCLV) in Cuba, in the context of the Strategic International Partnership between the VUB and UCLV. Rocco collaborated with Prof. Dr Yulier Campos Pérez (Dean of the Social Sciences Faculty), leader of the project “Legal Foundations for the Ethical and Legal Use of IT and Artificial Intelligence in Cuba”.
The visit focused on developing joint research and capacity-building strategies on AI regulation and data protection. It brought added value by sharing LSTS’s internationally recognised expertise on the governance of emerging technologies—knowledge that is still in early stages of development in Cuba and much of Latin America, thus contributing to regional capacity-building. UCLV is a strategic partner of the VUB, and the visit served to strengthen existing collaboration and foster new alliances. Additionally, one of the main objectives of the visit was knowledge sharing, particularly through participation at the 6th international legal conference “Challenges of Law in the 21st Century” organised by UCLV, in which Rocco will address the Governance Structure of AI Regulation with special focus on the role of AI Authorities at the EU and International Level.
