Research from the Law, Science, Technology and Society (LSTS) research group has been selected for European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) as part of the 2024 Independent Research Projects initiative. This recognition underscores the EDPS's support for promising research initiatives in the area of data protection and privacy.
The title of the awarded project is “Untangling Digital Euro’s Personal Data Protection Challenges: An Exploration of Data Processing Activities and Latent Privacy Risks,” and it analyses the data protection and privacy implications of the European Commission legislative proposal on the Digital Euro. Led by LSTS researchers Andrés Chomczyk Penedo, Pablo Rodrigo Trigo Kramcsák, Michaël Van den Poel, and Alessandro Ortalda, the research project identifies and examines two principal challenges presented by the proposed Digital Euro in the context of data protection: unclear allocation of roles and responsibilities; balance between data minimisation and availability.
