Laurence will be speaking at Gikii 2019 on the cross-over between legal analytics and legal philosophy, using Ted Chiang’s novella Story of Your Life as a narrative hook. What does it mean to use algorithms to predict the future of law using only past legal text as input? What do we stand to gain and, perhaps more importantly, lose in the adoption of automated predictions? Can we continue fully to count as human being in the face of this ‘actuarial’ approach to justice?
