As part of the United Nations University’s 50th Anniversary celebrations, the Law, Science, Technology and Society (LSTS) Research Group at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) lead the international workshop “Learning from the Global Majority – Redefining Global AI Governance” in close partnership with FARI and UNU-CRIS and co-organised with representatives from across the world.
The workshop in July convened experts from across Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Europe to explore inclusive, context-aware approaches to artificial intelligence governance. LSTS researchers played a central role in shaping and facilitating the workshop, which focused on three core themes: capacity, safety, and sustainability in global AI development.
LSTS Doctoral researcher Cong Yao addressed the workshop with a critical analysis of the global AI divide, introducing the concept of the "AI innovation paradox" and calling for ethical and inclusive policy responses. LSTS PhD researchers Thiago Moraes and Anastasia Karagianni also contributed to the organisation and discussions, bringing expertise on AI regulatory sandboxes and gendered perspectives in AI governance.
