Sergi Vazquez Maymir
Biography
Sergi VAZQUEZ MAYMIR is a lawyer specialized in data protection law. He graduated in Law (2009) and in Business Management and Administration (2011) at the Pompeu Fabra University of Barcelona. He also obtained an LLM in Law & Technology from Tilburg University (2017).
Before starting his doctoral research at VUB, he held a student-assistant position at the Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society (TILT), performing research on privacy and criminal-procedural law in the context of new technological developments in police investigation. Later, joined INTERPOL as a Legal Trainee at the Secretariat of the Commission for the Control of INTERPOL´s Files (CCF)
Sergi’s doctoral research focuses on the role of data protection officers in the field of law enforcement. His thesis examines the fundamental policy problems of data protection in law enforcement by focusing on those who are entrusted with its adequate implementation, monitoring, and supervision. Combining desk research with empirical analysis, he examines the key elements of this role introduced in the EU Directive 2016/680
In addition to his data privacy research as a doctoral candidate at VUB, Sergi has contributed to several research projects funded by the European Commission in police and judicial cross-border cooperation, border information systems, cybercrime, surveillance, as well as artificial intelligence.
