You are warmly invited to our next LSTS Gender, Law, and Technology Session for a guest lecture by Pr. Marie-Laure Basilien-Gainche, which will take place on Tuesday 9 December 2025, from 12:30 to 13:30 CET, in room C4.09 and online via Teams.
Pr. Basilien-Gainche is Professor of Law at the University Jean Moulin Lyon 3 and a member of the Institut Convergences Migrations. She is also a Senior Member of the Institut Universitaire de France and serves on the Scientific Committee of the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights. Her work focuses on human rights, migration, asylum, and the rule of law, with a particular interest in the legal and political treatment of migrants and refugees.
In this Guest Speaker Lecture titled “Afghan women as a certain social group”, Pr. Basilien-Gainche will examine the CJEU’s judgment of 4 October 2024 in cases C-608/22 and C-609/22 (Bundesamt für Fremdenwesen und Asyl and Others). She will explore the situation of Afghan women under the second Taliban regime, a situation often described as a form of gender apartheid. The lecture will consider whether this context warrants recognition of refugee status under the 1951 Geneva Convention, analysing how the concepts of persecution and particular social group are interpreted within EU asylum law.
Very much looking forward to seeing you there!
