Two LSTS researchers, Olga Gkotsopoulou and Lina Jasmontaite made it through the pre-selection rounds and will compete at the annual VUB Doctoral Derby Finals, presenting their research projects to a wide audience! After three hybrid preselection sessions, 9 VUB PhD candidates from the three VUB Doctoral Schools were selected to the Doctoral Derby Finals based on an audience and a professional jury vote.
Lina and Olga will compete for the final jury & audience vote on June 7th, 2022 from 17h to 19h at Muntpunt, Brussels.
What is the Doctoral Derby? The Doctoral Derby, the VUB yearly contest for PhD candidates and postdocs, is all about science communication. Over the course of three months, the contenders learn to explain their research in a simple and effective way. Firstly, by writing a compelling summary of their research and, secondly, by presenting it in front of a physical audience, all with a general public of non-experts in mind. Every step in the competition comes with a training. The nine finalists get the chance to record a professionally edited video of their research pitch in collaboration with Science Figured Out. The public vote winner and jury winner of the Doctoral Derby will also both receive a working credit of 500 euro.
